The automatic transmission car likely gets poorer fuel mileage, but not like what you are describing. I also have a 4afe, but with a manual transmission. When the driving is only on the highway, it is even higher. My speeds are about 35-40 mph for most of the drive, with about 1 mile at 60 mph. My 1992 Corolla gets 32+ driving 16 miles each way to work and home each day. It also seems to have a lot more kick than mine. My buddy has a '91 4dr and his just drops to idle like its going to die and it catches itself, which is what I'm used to with most cars. This one's when it's been sitting for about 1.25 hrs. Here are some videos detailing my idle woes, let me know what you guys think please Should it be higher?!? I would think so but I thought I'd ask. Another thing is it seems to take way longer to settle into idle than I've ever had a vehicle do, indicating a vacuum leak I'd think but I can't find one!!Īlso with mileage, I'm getting about 17-19 in city, and 25-27 highway. Well, no more codes, and egr held vacuum, so I'd assume it doesn't leak.Īfter that it irked at around 1500 rpm! So I adjusted it down, it won't go down any further than what it's at now. Next I tore apart the entire throttle body and E&T system and cleaned the begeezus out of them (was getting an egr code), throttle body was super gummed, egr tubes were plugged, you name it. My questions pertain to the idle speed, I though it was high when I got it running (900-1000 rpm), so I did the spray carb cleaner everywhere to see if idle changes, no dice, in fact, I don't think I've EVER found that to work, unless I've never had a vacuum leak? New cap, rotor, wires, plugs, oil change with seafoam and engine restore additive, new trans fluid, new tires (175/75r13), new rear shocks, new muffler, gutted cat (was the problem with the vehicle when I got it, which is why it was given to me), new inner and outer tie rods on both sides, new radiator, new throttle body and egr gaskets, completely cleaned egr and throttle body, and it's been aligned. So, I saw life in this rig when I saw compression of 190 across all cylinders! And, she has 283k! The previous service records on this car are non existent, I got it from someone who doesn't know what the word maintenance is, and the owner before him likely didn't know anything about cars either. My questions surround the idle and gas mileage. Hey y'all, I'm still new to this vehicle, but have done a lot of work to it up to this point.
